Shelob Revealed in New Middle-Earth: Shadow of War Trailer

Middle-Earth: Shadow of War

The giant spider Shelob takes the spotlight in the latest Middle-Earth: Shadow of War trailer, but she has a very different form than Lord of the Rings fans are familiar with.

While the books and previous media portray Shelob only as a spider, the upcoming game also gives her a human appearance, allowing her to interact more naturally with the game’s protagonist, Talion. To Talion, she will be an ally, helping him with prophetic visions, but Celebrimbor, the elf-spirit that empowers Talion, sees Shelob as a threat. This opposition between the two lead characters appears to be a source of major contention within the personal narrative of the game, a glimpse of which can be found in the trailer below:

Middle-Earth: Shadow of War continues the story begun in 2014’s Shadow of Mordor, with Talion this time looking to go head-to-head with Sauron and the Nazgul after forging his own Ring of Power. The previous game’s signature feature, the Nemesis System, returns in an upgraded form with more options available for the NPC builds, and will this time be applied to both enemies and allies. Similarly, the open-ended approach to mission design has been improved, with players now given the option to use Followers from the various Middle-Earth races to execute strategic manoeuvres and overcome enemy strongholds.

The game was originally scheduled to release in August, but was delayed last month, and is now scheduled for an October 10 release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The developers at Monolith Productions also recently announced and released the Nemesis Forge update for Shadow of Mordor, which will allow players to import their strongest enemy and ally into the upcoming sequel.
