Shenmue III Is Best It Can Be “With the Current Technology”

Shenmue III creative director Yu Suzuki has hinted that the game could have met his vision better on future technology.

Speaking with GameSpot during E3 via a translator, Suzuki mentioned that his “vision” for the project has remained unchanged since the series first began in 1999. However, an off-hand comment suggests Shenmue III could have been more ambitious:

“He’s done as best as he can with the current technology.”

However, discussion shifted away from that comment afterwards, with Suzuki going on to praise the amount of freedom he has enjoyed in the development process thanks to the trust of fans.

Suzuki added that one of the most difficult aspects of the game’s production has been the lack of a publisher’s backing. For the two earlier games, Sega provided an experienced team, but Ys Net has had to be built from the ground up to support the creation of Shenmue III.

Recently, the game attracted ire for signing to a one-year exclusivity deal with the Epic Games Store on PC. After also suffering a recent delay, the title will be released on that PC storefront, as well as the PlayStation 4, on November 19, 2019.
