Single Player Week in Review – April 29

3

It’s been a pretty hectic week for us here at Only Single Player as we are beginning to plan our E3 coverage, add more people to our team and just doing our best to bring you all the latest single player news. We have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming months and May is going to start it all.

Max Payne 3 & Dragon’s Dogma

Well, I just ordered a new gaming rig today, 3.6 GHz Cpu with an AMD Radeon 6670. I’m hoping it’ll get the job done for just about any game  I want to play and with Max Payne 3 coming up soon, I’m wondering which system I’ll play it on. I have to choose between my 360, PS3 and now, a gaming PC. Besides that, I’m really excited to get a third person shooter with a great storyline. Everything we’ve seen about the game just looks fantastic. The animations, gun-play, characters, it’s all there. Another game that surprisingly keened my interest was Dragon’s Dogma. As I stated in my hands-on impressions, I really wasn’t all that interested. Yea, the bosses looked great in the videos, but the gameplay I was looking at just wasn’t doing it for me. I guess it’s really one of those games that you have to actually play to really make judgement. Not that it’s one of the only games that you can do so, but from the videos we see, that’s usually how your impressions are formed. Max Payne 3 is a great example of that. I have no doubt in my mind about that game having any issues and honestly, without even playing it, I can tell it’s going to be a game of the year contender

@ Only SP

Things have been picking up here at Only SP. We finally got our first interview with the David Fracchia over at Radical Entertainment where he answered some questions about the storyline of Prototype 2 and gave us some other juicy details. If you haven’t noticed we’re really trying hard to bring you information that you can’t find anywhere else. We have a surprise interview lined up next month that should surprise everyone here. For now I can’t say anything, but it’ll definitely be a game that many of you should really look into. We’re also hiring new writers, so if you’re a single player enthusiast and are looking for a place to jump into game journalism feel free to apply for a spot. We’re looking to create a podcast for the site as well so start applying!

Personal Gaming Update

I’m so watered down with games right now it’s not even funny. I’m still working on my Witcher 2 review, currently writing my Birds of Steel review and just yesterday I got my Prototype 2 review copy so I’ve been cracking away at that one as well. Surprisingly enough, I just can’t put it down. It’s one of those games that has a lot of flaws and sort of misses what it was aiming for in some areas, but you can easily forgive the flaws because it really is a game that’s meant for pure fun. Some of the gore really makes you cringe as well, not even joking about that one. There’s a certain ability that literally pulls your foe into a bunch of separate pieces and you hear every crack of bone and tear of skin. As I said earlier, I’m really looking forward to Max Payne 3 on the 15th and Ghost Recon Future Soldier as well on the 22nd. I believe Dragon’s Dogma comes out on the 22nd as well. Thankfully I’m done with school on the 25th and after that I won’t be leaving my room for about eh a week? Tell us what you’ve been up to in the comments below!

  1. First I'd like to say congrats on the new rig Nick. I have a pretty good PC but I need to update my graphics card for the new stuff. I have an i7 920 @ 920ghz, 8gb of DDR3 ram, and an ATI Radeon HD 4800 series grapics card. I can meet the minimum specs for BF3 but to really experience it I would need to upgrade. I don't really play on my PC but I would like to start playing it more as I have bought quite a few games off of Steam. I think if I buy a controller for it then it would be easier for me. I'm just not to into the keyboard/mouse combo.

I'm hoping Max Payne 3 turns out great because it sure is looking the part. I won't be buying it D1 as I've slowed down on buying games D1 and at full price. I just can't get to them all as fast as I was buying them. For example I didn't get around to playing RAGE until it was available to buy for $20 and I had bought it for $60 the week it released. I enjoyed the game none the less so it was to bad but I'm just pickier now that gets a D1P from me.

Dragon's Dogma doesn't look to bad. I downloaded the demo but haven't tried it yet. Maybe tomorrow night. It's always good to see new original IP's and new games that aren't all about the MP.

I have always wanted to get into writing about gaming. I wrote one review for Fallout 3 GOTY edition which my wife said was pretty good. I'm pretty happy with most of it but I know I need some more practice and learning. I was thinking about looking into a class or something to get better. After I read this post I looked up some stuff online and actually found some free online classes. It's been running through my head since a little after I started visiting the site to see if I had the skills to work with all of you. I'm just kinda nervous about it. If you want I could send you my Fallout 3 review and see what you think. Hell it would be nice to just get some criticism about what and where I could improve. Let me know if you want to check it out.

PGU: I'm almost finished with my platinum for LEGO: Pirates of the Caribbean. It's been a pretty fun game and the abilities that some of the characters have really  pertain to what they did in the movies. Like using Jack's compass to find things. I should be done by tomorrow night and have my 16th plat.

I started Castlevania: LoS since that was the game a few people told me to play next out of the list I put up in the comments from last weeks Week in Review. I'm really enjoying it so far. It does have a few things that bother me like the way the levels play out. They are pretty linear and you select each level out of a book. The plus about that though is you can go back to older levels very easily and find items you couldn't get before until you had certain upgrades. The story has been very brief so far too but that may be that I'm only at the end of chapter 2 and I think it has something like 11 chapters. Each chapter also has about 8 or 10 sub-chapters I think. Can't remember at the moment.

I traded in a few games I was done with so I picked up Atelier Totori (the second game to the Arland RPG series), and Hyperdimension Neptunia since I've been wanting those for a while. With the trade ins I had and a $10 off coupon I payed $4 out  of pocket. I even had a B2UG1U coupon from Gamestop since I had renewed my powerups membership. So with that I picked up Space Marine and Star Wars Force Unleashed 1 & 2.

That's about it for me this week. Pretty long comment but I do enjoy posting them.

    1. I forgot to mention I won the Ninja Gaiden 3 Collector's Edition off of another site by following their Twitter feed. It showed up today in the mail but haven't played it yet. I did open it though and boy I love the action figures that it came with.

  2. I'm wondering where the promised April surprise for RAGE is… tomorrow's still April, right?
