Every once in a while, you happen upon an obscure melody from a similarly obscure game that is so passionately made and brimming with emotional energy that you can’t help but feel you’s stumbled upon buried treasure. This is one such piece of music.
Today’s track, seen below, doesn’t really have a title, and we can’t find who composed it due to the aforementioned obscurity, but what we do know is that it plays during the the sixth mission in the game, “Jo-Ad 2,” and that it’s absolutely delightful. The track fully encapsulates a feeling of joy and optimistic escapism. Everything about it, from the pace to the rhythm to the use of wind instruments, conveys the sense of a satisfying and larger than-life journey that promises pleasant times ahead.
As a kid, I was a massive fan of Buzz Lightyear and especially his Disney animated spinoff series, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, which I remember dashing home after school to catch on TV. The PC/PS1/Dreamcast game that this track is from doesn’t hold up quite as well as the show, but thankfully the soundtrack itself is just as appealing now as it was when it first entered my eardrums many years ago. This was the song that played in my head during long car rides or lonely days at recess to take my mind off of life, and I can confidently say that’s a very important and influential part of my life. Not that you should care.
We apologize for the constant chirping of farm animals that serves as background noise, but the music seems to have been overlayed with the sound effects from the level, and this is the only version of the track I could find.
