A post on NeoGaf indicates that Valve is currently developing a next-gen gaming engine.  Files found in the Source Filmmaker, like the one seen below, refer to “Source 2”, the next-gen engine in-question.  Check out the post:

We’re only one file deep, and already it’s clear that the references to “Source 2” are indeed referring to a next-gen engine that Valve is currently developing. I’m only going to show one line in this post, but there are about 60+ references here, and this one line is probably the most telling.

The Pastebin & file path:

Line 1387:
”’Return an str with the current engine version.
If key doesn’t doesn’t exist, assume ‘Source’, otherwise invalid — assume next-gen ‘Source 2′.”’

In addition to the post above, a user on Facepunch has posted an image of SFM files indicating new development tools for the Source 2 engine.  Aside from the obvious “Source 2” file names, the image also makes note of the new icons for the tools and how they differ from those found in the original Source engine.  Click on the image below to enlarge.

So, is Valve’s next-gen Source 2 engine currently in development?  Speculations about potential ties to the next installment of the Half-Life series are already being made.  If that’s the case, this news is going to make a lot of eager gamers very happy.  We’re just getting the first hints of this news, but we’ll be sure to stay on top of it and let you know if we hear anything more definitive.  Make sure to stay tuned to OnlySP for more news and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for up-to-the-minute information.

I'm a new dad, gaming machine, and beard aficionado. With a little one in the house, I've come to embrace the single-player experience, as it is much less likely to send me into a profanity-laced, controller-throwing tantrum. Writing and video games are two of my greatest passions, so this is a natural fit for me. As long as it doesn't require me to perform coordinated dance moves in front of my Kinect, i'm willing to pen my thoughts on it. Aside from gaming, I love music (Smashing Pumpkins), coffee (Red-Eye), and sushi (Yellowtail). All offerings of my aforementioned favorites will be accepted with open arms and, if you're lucky, i'll let you touch my beard. Just don't pull on it. That hurts.
