The latest financial report from Square Enix strongly suggests that the company’s The Avengers Project will release in approximately 12 months.
During the presentation, company president Yosuke Matsuda mentioned that Square Enix currently has “many overseas projects slated for launch in FY2019/3 and beyond.” In Japan, the third financial quarter runs from October to December, which provides a window for the unnamed projects. However, a question later in the presentation provided clear indication that The Avengers Project is at least one of those games.
Matsuda was asked about the progress of the three-year development lead time for Square Enix’s games (and particularly the Western-developed titles), to which he replied, “you will be able to tell how long our development lead times are based on the launch dates we will be announcing… the development efforts for the new titles we will be launching starting in FY2019/3 are proceeding in line with our plans.” The three-year development pipeline fits directly with the schedule of Crystal Dynamics, which is leading development on The Avengers Project, as its previous game, Rise of the Tomb Raider, was initially released in November 2015.
While further hints were not forthcoming, Matsuda also mentioned that the company expects to announce the release dates for its major projects, both those developed in Japan and in the West, in the first half of next year.
If the release window is accurate, The Avengers Project will be the second Marvel property to see release in 2018, following Insomniac’s Spider-Man earlier in the year.
