Undead Labs, a fitting company to be developing the forthcoming State of Decay, has revealed more information about their game within a recently released trailer. Titled “Tactics”, the newly published video contains quite a bit of information regarding the (hopefully) soon to be released XBLA (Xbox Live Arcade) and PC title.
Within the first ten seconds of the video, a fully inflamed car careens down the street and crashes in front of a local Mini-Mart. After taking out a few zombies during the drive up, the real battle begins after the player smoothly ejects himself from the moving vehicle. The zombies quickly attack and the machete wielding character comes out swinging.
Much like in ZombiU where the cricket bat is your best friend, the machete seems to be the weapon of choice in at least this early level of the title. Undead Labs has stated that they expect to have 30 to 40 melee weapons to choose from throughout the open world game. Where ammo is scarce in most survival-horror outings, there may be plenty to go around in this one. The face-to-face zombie killing happens between 0:18 and 0:53 in the YouTube video listed below. With my (unofficial) count there were 8 kills by headshot and 3 via melee. It appears State of Decay may be embracing more action based roots than horror ones.
To summarize the trailer; without missing a beat the player jumps from the flaming vehicle, rolls evasively away from the incoming zombies and then positions himself ready for battle. All of this takes place within a few flawless motions that makes zombie dodging look like a breeze. A few machete strikes take down a couple undead, then the player retreats briefly toward the camera to give themselves some room to work with. That’s when all hell breaks loose. The player pulls out their pistol and quickly fires multiple headshots at each oncoming zombie exploding head after head. At one point the player is surprised by a zombie from behind. Although he suffers a few bites, the character shrugs the zombie off and continues with the undead rampage with no problem. Again, by the end of the quick trailer, 8 zombies have perished via headshots. Not too shabby. Towards the end the of the demonstration the player finds a stack of supplies. After radioing friends, a NPC comes to help collect the goods. Meanwhile, a menu opens up asking the player to decide what they want to spend their accumulated “influence” points on. Options include a variety of things such as relocating home base, vehicle delivery or just offering words of inspiration.
There’s still polishing to be done, but common thinking is that Microsoft hopes to release the title during its annual Summer of Arcade. It’s still a little rough around the edges at this point, but the game as a whole looks like a joy to play. Here’s hoping that a few more months under the hood can help distinguish this title as a must own. State of Decay is a “Big Twelve” title of OnlySP.com. Keep your eyes peeled for more information coming soon.
