The genre of Survival-Horror was in its heyday back in the 90s, and survived in the mid 2000s. However by the 2010s the genre began a downward slope with less titles hitting store shelves. With the new generation of consoles and abundance of PC indie support, Survival-Horror is now stronger then ever and will be making a comeback on the new generation of consoles.
Titles to watch
Evil Within: It dawned on the father of Survival-Horror, Shinji Mikami, that the genre was slowly retreating in the shadows. Before his retirement, Mikami made it his mission to bring back the genre he created with his new title Evil Within. By combining gameplay elements of Resident Evil 4 and bringing back psychological scares seen in earlier titles, Mikami plans on reinvigorating the genre as a whole for the newer consoles.
In Evil Within, you play as Detective Sebastian Castellanos who comes face to face with an evil force in an asylum. Sebastian finds himself in a personal hell that players must navigate through with brute force and stealth. Sebastian must uncover what is causing this mysterious force while trying to survive.
Evil Within releases October 14th, 2014 on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3, and PC.
Alien: Isolation: Surprised to see an Alien title on the list? So am I. With the disappointing failure that Aliens: Colonial Marines was, many fans of the hit movie franchise lost hope that a video game could do justice to the Xenomorphs. However, Creative Assembly, creators of the popular Total War franchise, decided to inject a new formula in the series by making a game based on the first movie by Ridley Scott, with more focus on horror in the veins of Outlast.
Gamers play as Amanda Ripley, who is investigating the disappearance of her mother that occurred 15 years earlier. Players will explore the space station Sevastopol to locate the flight recorder of the original ship Nostromo.
The game is set to release on October 7th, 2014 for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3, and PC.
Soma: After Frictional Games success of the popular Survival-Horror game Amnesia: Dark Descent, the developer decided to switch genres to science fiction horror. Not much information has been released about the game except for some gameplay trailers, but it is expected to release in 2015. The game will once again be played in first-person where players will encounter strange creatures.
Soma takes place on PATHOS-2, an underwater research station with computers that begin to develop human characteristics. The developers also used a famous quote by science fiction author Phillip K. Dick to set the mood for the game’s atmosphere. The title is planned for release on PC.
Routine: Another first-person Survival-Horror game, Lunar Software a new indie company announced the game at Gamescom 2012. The game was later Greenlit by Steam, but no release date has been given. There is not much information about the game, but the game will feature no HUD and have random encounters in the environment. The player is given one life for each playthrough and are equipped with a weapon known as CAT (Cosmonaut Assistance Tool).
The new game is not linear and will be set on an abandoned Moon base with environments similar to the future vision of the 80s. Players much discover why the crew of the Lunar station has gone missing, while discovering horrors that will shake the players resolve.
The game is set to release on PC.
Until Dawn: In 2012, Supermassive Games, a new internal studio in Sony Entertainment revealed a new Survival-Horror title that was exclusive to PS3 and would use the Playstation Move in a first person perspective. The new game would bring elements from classic teen horror movies such as Friday the 13th and Saw. The game went silent for two years until this week’s Gamescom, where the title has been revealed to be rebooted for PS4 and in third-person.
In the game, players will experience different perspectives as teenagers in a remote cabin in the mountains will be hunted down by a masked serial killer. It is the anniversary of the death of their friend Sam, and the game will star actors Hayden Panettiere, Rami Malek, and Brett Dalton. No tentative release date has been announced.
Silent Hills: The game Silent Hills was just revealed yesterday through the unique means of a teaser demo called P.T. on the PS4 store. The game was announced to be a new entry in the popular Silent Hill franchise and is being developed by Kojima Productions, with Hideo Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro acting as directors. Famous actor Norman Reedus known for his roles in Boondock Saints and The Walking Dead, will star as the main character in the new title. Silent Hills is already one of my most anticipated games and no known details have been revealed yet.
In the P.T. demo, players play as a unknown character who awakens in a strange room. The player will lead the character through the same hallway different times with strange and macabre experiences taking place. Small exposition details are given through the radio about a strange murder that happened in the house.
Silent Hills has been given no release date as it was just revealed at Gamescom 2014, and no platforms besides PS4 have been named. Silent Hill is easily my favorite Survival-Horror franchise and I can’t wait to see what genius Kojima has in store for fans.
Not only is Survival-Horror not dead, but its pulse is stronger then ever. With amazing titles releasing for Xbox One, PS4, and PC, fans will be busy in 2014-2015 with a bevy of titles. This October will be one of the best for fans of the horror genre, and Kojima plans on bringing back a stagnant franchise, no horror fan has any means to worry.
