A new trailer for The Last of Us: Part II has unexpectedly dropped at the Paris Games Week, showing off new characters and hinting at the storyline of the new game.
The trailer, which is embedded below, is a cut-scene taken from the upcoming game, showing a violent altercation between survivors and what could be an early incarnation of the Fireflies. Be warned, the trailer contains brutal violence against women, and may be unpleasant for some viewers.
The trailer will come as a surprise for most, not least because it features four new characters in The Last of Us’s world and makes no mention of series protagonists Ellie and Joel.
Naughty Dog subsequently created a Facebook post that identified the four new characters (and their actors) in this trailer, which includes Victoria Grace as Yara, Ian Alexander as Lev, Emily Swallow as Emily, and Laura Bailey as ████.
While the precise identities have not been revealed, some commentators (including IGN’s Jonathan Dornbush) have theorised Laura Bailey’s unnamed character may be Ellie’s mother. Bailey’s character was noted to have a four letter name and, in appearance, resembles the grown-up Ellie shown in the previous trailer for The Last of Us: Part II.
As Anna died after giving birth to Ellie, this trailer possibly takes place twenty years before the events of The Last of Us: Part II, only a few years after the cordyceps outbreak. Dornbush states, “If it’s her mom, this is a prequel. So I think The Last of Us: Part II is going to do a Godfather: Part II prequel-sequel combination.”
As Naughty Dog has already experimented with this method of storytelling with DLC The Last of Us: Left Behind, the prequel/sequel narrative may be a safe bet.
