The Last of Us – The Survival Game We’ve All Been Waiting For

0

The Last of Us wowed the crowds at E3 yesterday, and is probably in the running to be the game of the show. Naughty Dog truly has outdone themselves with The Last of Us and we cannot wait to see what’s next for the game. But for now, we finally have a good bit of story details to share with you. We’ll also include the E3 demo in this article in-case you missed it during Sony’s Press Conference yesterday.

The Last of Us is all about survival. A pandemic swept the lands 20 years before the game begins and now survivors will do anything they can to survive. Stealing and murder is just a part of everyday life for the characters in The Last of Us. The main character is Joel, a ruthless survivor who is hired by a friend to get Ellie, a 14 year old girl, out of a quarantine zone. Knowing Naughty Dog, the relationship between the two characters will become much more than just a job. According to Naughty Dog, this game will be an “Intense character-driven narrative featuring a cast of resonant characters that take you on a rich, emotional journey .”

As we saw during the E3 demo, The Last of Us is a seriously intense game. The actions you’ll see in the video below, if you haven’t already, are not scripted. The controller could have picked a numerous number of paths to tackle the situation, but in this demo he chooses the semi-stealth route. You’ll literally be scrounging around the ground for ammo for your guns, so a heavy focus on melee combat is placed in The Last of Us. During the fights, Joel essentially uses whatever he can find to take down his foe. Whether it be a wall, a dresser, a molotov, or even hand crafted from the backpack that serve as your inventory–this game will not be holding your hand by highlighting a weapon on the ground.

Something truly remarkable seen in the demo, though, is the player emotion. We have to remember, these are people, just doing whatever they can to survive in a world where there’s almost nothing left. During the final fight of the demo, we see Joel beat down a man that had only moments ago tried to kill him. When Joel snatches the shotgun from the man and beats him to the floor with it and takes aim at the mans face, the man pleads for his life. I have never seen a game where the AI is so lifelike that it was almost hard to watch and when Joe literally blows the guy’s head off, I had this feeling in my gut like, did he really need to do that? They’re both just trying to do the same thing. Survive.

It is just a game after all, but that demo literally made me feel like I was watching a movie and I cannot wait to get my hands on The Last of Us. The world you’ll be exploring is expertly crafted and looks utterly beautiful in the footage that was shown. Mother Nature has retaken its place in what used to be thriving cities and I just don’t know how Naughty Dog could make it look even more realistic. The Last of Us will be coming to immerse PS3 players sometime in early 2013, make sure you don’t pass this one up.
