The upcoming Action-RPG Scalebound had a panel at PAX Prime yesterday, hosted by Xbox Live’s Major Nelson. Creative Producer JP Kellams, Executive Producer Atsushi Inaba, and Game Director Hideki Kamiya gave out a ton of insight to what inspired them and how they’re defining the genre, as well as lots of details about how your dragon buddy Thuban mechanically works.
Kamiya explained that the idea for Scalebound was drawn from a childhood fascination of dragons and dinosaurs, mixed with the formative impressions from cultural icons like Godzilla. He felt that while dragons were common encounters or side characters in other games, no RPG had successfully scratched the itch of being able to take the role of the dragon.
Kellams went into some detail about how you can actually customize the dragon. “We really want you to invest in the dragon,” he told audiences, explaining that while many were curious if the main character Drew was customizable, it was the dragon who would be the real show-stopper. And of course, they confirmed that you will indeed be able to fly in-engine atop your dragon.
