Obsidian Entertainment has spoken about the narrative, gameplay, and length of its upcoming RPG The Outer Worlds.

During YouTube’s E3 Live stream, Geoff Keighley spoke to senior narrative designer Megan Starks about the game’s comedy.

“We have lots of different styles of humour,” said Starks. “Whether it’s like Coen brothers, or Futurama, or Firefly, there’s a little bit of everything.”

Starks spoke about the level that players at E3 are able to access. The world, called Monarch, is featured about midway through the game. The planet was terraformed incorrectly, resulting in wildlife going crazy and corporations pulling out. Monarch became forbidden to citizens, but the player is able to explore and wreak havoc.

Starks felt that the game’s length is “really nice,” being “just enough to have a lot of fun and feel like it’s meaty, but not so long that you can’t finish it.”

She noted that, during focus tests, players immediately begin a new build of the game to try something different due to the various choices available.

During Microsoft’s press conference, Obsidian announced that The Outer Worlds will be released on October 25, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Rhain discovered a long time ago that mixing one of his passions (video games) with the other (writing) might be a good idea, and now he’s been stuck in the industry for over six years with no means of escaping. His favourite games are those with deep and captivating narratives: while it would take far too long to list them all, some include L.A. Noire, Red Dead Redemption (and its sequel), Wolfenstein: The New Order, The Last of Us, and the Uncharted series.
