Valkyria Chronicles 4 Returns the Series to its Roots

Valkyria Chronicles 4

After a week of teases, Sega has announced Valkyria Chronicles 4 as a new entry that returns the series to its original setting and genre.

Set for a worldwide release next year, the game will take place during the Second Europan War, although players will fight on behalf of the Atlantic Federation, rather than the independent nation of Gallia from the first three titles. The main cast of characters is collectively referred to as Squad E, under the command of Claude Wallace, and is tasked with the daunting mission of infiltrating and capturing the Imperial capital. Despite the high stakes, Sega is referring to the central narrative as “a coming-of-age” story, with the bonds of friendship between the squad members being tested by circumstances. A first glimpse at the story is available in the trailer embedded below.

After Valkyria Revolution adopted an action-RPG bent, Valkyria Chronicles 4 will return to the turn-based/real-time hybrid BLiTZ battle system of the original trilogy. However, the mechanics have been upgraded to take advantage of modern hardware, and will boast a new soldier class, as well as larger battlefields and more support options and controllable units than any previous entry.

Sega has also announced that the first story DLC for the game will be focused around a joint battle with the first game’s Squad 7, and completing it will unlock those characters for use in the main campaign.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is currently scheduled for a Japanese PlayStation 4 release on March 21, with a Switch release coming later in summer. The game has also been confirmed for a Western release on PS4, Switch, and Xbox One some time in 2018, and, if the localisation process of Valkyria Revolution is any indication, it should be expected around August or September.
