Watch_Dogs Development is Not in Jeopardy, “Being Polished as We Speak”

9

Don’t you just LOVE rumors?

Gaming website igameresponsibly reported today that the trademark for Watch_Dogs has been dropped, and went on further to create an inflammatory title, stating that the development of the game is in jeopardy. Well, according to Ubisoft Montreal, that is certainly not the case.

When pressed by a Twitter user asking if the game was cancelled, a Ubisoft Montreal representative simply told that user to “not believe the rumors”.

Tweeting in English this time, Ubisoft Montreal went on further to say that Watch_Dogs is still “being polished as we speak”.

I was actually just in contact today with one of the PR reps for Watch_Dogs, Raha Bouda, to see about lining up an interview with the development team a few weeks from now. Raha told me that, “We’re [Ubisoft] currently offline and not communicating about the game but once we’re back, we’d love to work with you.”

So what does the drop of the trademark mean? And what’s going on with the development of the Wii U version of the game? Who knows for sure, but all that matters right now is that the development of the game is indeed NOT in jeopardy. You can probably assume though that with the trademark dropped, and the Wii U version not being listed, something is going on behind the scenes that Ubisoft is simply just not ready to talk about yet.

UPDATE: Ubisoft have contacted us about the issue and had this to say.

We are working directly with the USPTO on reinstating the trademark for Watch Dogs and it will be active again in the coming days. The matter has no impact on the Watch Dogs’ development.

  1. You have to be pretty dumb to think Watch Dogs’ development is in jeopardy…that is called fishing for hits.

    1. Agreed. Although, not entirely dumb, some projects have been very close to completion and suddenly cancelled. Although, those games had A LOT more problems than Watch Dogs.

      1. The trade mark being canceled is odd news unless they re-naming it.

  2. Almost certain it will just be a rebranding for Watch_Dogs. It’s probably just a name change that has escalated to rumors of cancellation, which is a bit odd.

  3. “Assassin’s Creed 5: The Wire”. :D

    1. Yea I saw a few sites speculate the game was a new Assassin’s Creed now “smh”.

  4. Am I the only one who notice that it’s alot of rumors come out of IGR lately

    1. A lot of their rumors come from NeoGAF posts which they don’t source when reporting on. Kinda the main reason I hate reporting on rumors, which is why I avoided their original story all together or even bothering linking to it since it was based on speculation. Of course, other sites nabbed it up very quickly.

Part of the problem with this is companies just not coming out and giving some reassurance which leads to crap being spread all around the net.

      1. @Nick_Cal:disqus The issue isn’t reporting on rumors. Report rumors all day but make sure you define them as rumor. The problem is people will report rumors and even speculate on them without really citing the item is a rumor (or speculation).
