We here at OnlySP have somehow missed the recent explosion of info on John Romero’s upcoming game. He is essentially the father of first-person shooters, after all, so we feel a collection of all the details so far is in order.
Firstly, Romero announced his plans for an old-school FPS on March 11. He specifically stated it would be an old-school FPS that karkens back to the early days of the genre. Mercifully, he also stated that it would not be Daikatana 2.
Later, he explained that he was “not a fan of on-rail shooting or slow-moving cover systems. That’s not to say that Gears isn’t a great game but as a player I’m more interested in speed and fast movement. I do realise that a lot of the movement in new shooters is directly attributable to the console controller… they had to come up with some design to make it so the player can do something else if they can’t skillfully move quickly.” This is not surprising considering Romero has not had any hand in developing any modern shooters. In fact, his last project was the N-Gage version of Red Faction back in 2003, in which he assisted with development and which received mixed reviews. Still, he has a unique viewpoint of the genre considering how much it’s changed over just a decade or so.
Most recently it was revealed that the game “will be on PC first” and that Romero is aiming for an ‘MMO’ type design for his game, but in the way you might think. He elaborated on the idea; “It’s a persistent game, it has persistent player data, the character grows and gets better over time. I think most gamers expect that now anyway, but this was a design I’d done a while ago. I think it’s pretty valid. You will be playing the game as you would expect a shooter to feel, but the specifics of your situation, narrative wrapper and reward system are all unique.” While he didn’t want to give away anything else, he’s confident in the originality of the design. “I haven’t seen the design anywhere else.”
Make sure to stick around for any future info on Romero’s unique project.
