Wizards of the Coast has created a new game development studio to work on new IP outside of its flagship Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering brands.

Although nameless at present, this studio will be headed by James Ohlen, a 22-year veteran of BioWare who previously acted as a lead designer on Dragon Age: Origins, Neverwinter Knights, and Baldur’s Gate, among other titles.

Ohlen was also one of the founding members of BioWare’s Austin studio, where he directed Star Wars: The Old Republic, before leaving the company last year to embark on a new endeavour.

Speaking on his new role, Ohlen said, “I didn’t think that I would be coming back to the game industry so soon but working with Wizards is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Our mutual love of RPGs, world-building, and interactive storytelling is a perfect match.”

According to PCGamer, this new studio has greater breadth than just games development, with the source reporting a Wizards of the Coast representative calling it a “multimedia studio” with “freedom to develop different expressions.”
